Dear Parents,                                                                                                     October 2012

It was great to see so many of you at Open House last week and to be able to meet many of you for the first time! Thanks so much for attending, I think I had the most participation I’ve ever had here at J.E.S. thus far!

I wanted to tell you that we are just starting a unit on map skills and if you have a map your child can bring in this week to share that would be great! I have several from places I’ve traveled and I think it’s wonderful to be able to share all types of maps. If you have other types of maps, topographical, a city street map, land mass map, a hunting map etc, that would be great! We will be learning about the compass rose, and making a map of our bedroom soon!

In math we are starting to really focus on our facts to 10! Please practice this at home. At this point we are focusing on addition. This week were adding with #1 and #0, as this can confuse young children. We have weekly centers where students rotate through hands on activities and gain more practice with skills and concepts taught.

In Language Arts we are continuing to create charts on what reading to self looks like and partner- reading, then we spend several days practicing these skills. This goes along with our Guided Reading program where I or a teaching assistant meets with small groups of students in a leveled literacy (reading) group. Many of you had a chance to look at your child’s reading and writing folder at Open House. Some groups have started responding to their reading in writing in their Reader’s Response Journals. We will continue this skill all school year learning about different concepts and grammatical terms. Please continue to read nightly with your child, this is a proven way to build reading comprehension and fluency.

A reminder that next week is a short week for students as teachers have in-service time. Also, if you have not scheduled a parent-teacher conference yet, please call the office to set this up. The date is November 12 and I will be here from 8-5, meeting with parents.

**** I am also sending a book order. Please have these back to me with a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs by Monday Oct. 15.  I want to place the order by Tuesday evening so we will get any Halloween books back in plenty of time to enjoy them!

*** We will have a Harvest party on October 31st at 1:30 until 2:10. I will send home a list soon of items we will need.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call!

                                                                                                                                        Best Regards,
